Sustainability in Folkestone and Hythe
As an Ashford photographer, I was asked by the spectacular Liù Batchelor on behalf of nearby Folkestone and Hythe Council to take photos of this year’s Sustainable Futures Forum (SFF). This is a wonderful occasion for grassroots organisations around the district to come together and, not just discuss their sustainability programmes, but create some videos for social media under Liù’s instruction.
Hosted at EKC Folkestone College by Cllr Stephen Scoffham and James Wilderspin, Folkestone and Hythe’s Climate Change Specialist (who I found out I actually studied with back at university!), the event was bustling with the energy of participants keen to make a different to an environment they so clearly love.
Tackling Climate Change in Folkestone
Folkestone and Hythe District Council clearly take their climate change responsibilities seriously, with a number of schemes in place to help residents and businesses lower their emissions. From a carbon footprint calculator for working out individual emissions, a cycle hire scheme, to facilitating the Low Carbon Across the South East (LoCASE) programme (supported by the European Regional Development Fund), the SFF is one pillar of the council’s efforts to tackle climate change.
As the SSF’s website puts it,
All events are open to individuals, businesses, community groups, local parishes, etc in Folkestone & Hythe District and surrounding areas – with the aim of creating ‘more joined up thinking’
Whether you’re new to sustainability and wanting to learn more, or an experienced professional or group delivering projects – everyone is welcome. The emphasis on the event series is empowering collaboration and creating joined up thinking; so that everyone can play their part.
Each event date involves two standalone free events, but which complement each other, so you are welcome to stay for both;
1) The Workshop: a video workshop designed to help those with existing or new projects and ideas to showcase and promote what they are doing
2) The Forum: a relaxed event open to all and designed to facilitate wider knowledge sharing, networking and discussion
Upcoming Events
This was the first of this year’s events, the second of which will be held on Thursday 14th Nov (7.30-9pm). If you’ve missed both of these events and still want to get involved, you can find both the events list and a mailing list link at the SFF’s website here.
